'THE SMILE HIGH CLUB'
It's here. The countdown is finally over. Today sees the long-awaited launch of Bournemouth's first Air Festival.
Aviation enthusiasts are set to be transported to seventh heaven with half a million visitors expected to throng into the town during the four-day event.
The massive influx of spectators is set to generate around £17 million for the town with hoteliers, shops and restaurants among those reaping the rewards.
Most major retailers are opening until 8pm today, tomorrow and Saturday, with some restaurants serving up dishes based on the More Bus Bournemouth Air Festival theme.
Alison Gandolfi, chairman of the Bournemouth Area Hospitality Association said: "We hope the Air Festival becomes an annual event which establishes Bournemouth as not only the leading UK resort but puts us as a leader on the air festival map."
Featuring up to 15 hours of flying displays, the biggest tourism event in the town's history will take place between Bournemouth and Boscombe piers.
Visitors will be treated to a spectacular sight as the Avro Vulcan Bomber takes to the skies over Bournemouth for the first time in 17 years.

The Lower Gardens will be a hive of activity, particularly in the evenings when it will be the stage for a stunning hot air balloon glow, live music and street entertainment.
The entire stretch of the promenade between both piers will be packed full of family entertainment with demonstration areas, crafts, market stalls, interactive areas, fairground rides and plenty to eat and drink.
The RAF and Army will have mock-up cockpits, there will be an Army assault course, tanks and a static helicopter display.
Boat trips to the Royal Navy's RFA Mounts Bay will be available and the Electroglide Angels will be practising their flying skills tomorrow and Saturday in the Lower Gardens.
Intrepid aviator Armitage Tiger' Thompson will be entertaining the crowds in his miniature Spitfire aircraft.
There will also be flying demonstrations and static displays from the Liberty Raptor and Reptile Centre's birds of prey today, tomorrow and Saturday.

Once again good luck to everyone involved with the Bournemouth Air Festival. Lets all enjoy a great weekend, and make it worth coming back year after year.
Do not forget to support your local Sea Cadets along the promenade, at their recruiting stand.
Enjoy the festival, we will.

I gave all the details in a previous comments column Michael, but the paper has added more so it has moved down the queue.
According to the Vulcan in the Skies Trust website the Vulcan is at the Festival on Saturday and Sunday. It says from 9am. It is also at Shoreham air show form 11am. Thats nearest we can get to a time.

The information regarding timings is delibrately unclear. I myself have been in bournemouth by the pier over lunch time and there are thousands of people milling about wondering what and if anything is going to happen - so far a buzz by of the eurofighter early this morning and thats it. Lots of people complaining there is no information to basic timings.

I had heard the Vulcan missed a show last weekend and is broken somewhere up North with doubts it will make it to Bournemouth in time? Can anyone add any details? (This was from an enthusiasts blog).

whilst wallowing in the jingoistic nostalgic orgy, be aware what many of these things are - machines designed with the sole specific purpose to kill and maim fellow human beings. the lancaster took part in the firebombing of Dresden, a war crime up there with the worst, conveniently ignored as it was done to "them" not "us". so spare a thought for those who have died and who will die.

Official Dresden city records show there were well over 100 industrial concerns hidden in the city, still producing for the German war effort. Also, it was a major hub for the Wermacht transitting to and from the Eastern Front.
Whilst the destruction of the city was horrendous, it was in a war against a determined and ruthless enemy and should be looked at in that context.
Bomber Command were simply doing the job that they had been ordered to do.

We do not want this column turned into another excuse column for verbal abuse.
Lets be thankful that we have Armed Forces, and are capable of defending our realm.

We maybe lucky to get a low level flypast of the airfield! Hope so as I will be at the Flying Club for the festival.

Can the Council please explain why, on one of the busiest days on the roads with the air show going on, they choose to close one lane on each side of the duel carriageway between the Bear Cross Roundabout and the Mountbatten roundabout causing traffic mayhem and delays of up 1/2 to 3/4 hour? Closing the lanes to cut the central reservation grass at such a busy time was totally unacceptable. I'm surprised ANYONE made it into Bournemouth to see the air show at all! If anyone from the Council would like to respond, I'm sure those of us who were unlucky enough to have had to use this road would love to hear from you.

Come on Bournemouth. The town plans a festival with expectations of thousands travelling into town, and then allows a contractor to close off a main route. Or was Poole. I never know where the boundary lies.

So...
While we have to suffer fortnightly rubbish collections because of the 'environment' - the council chooses to burn tonnes upon tonnes of aviation fuel and attract thousands of cars burning more fuel into the area.
Hypocrites.
