A31 open after repair
 |
| CONGESTION CHAOS: Traffic crawls along the A31 as temporary traffic lights cause huge delays |
DRIVERS can breathe some relief after work to repair a collapsed manhole was completed, relieving a major route from some of its heavy congestion.
Temporary traffic lights were hurriedly installed on the A31 between Wimborne and Sturminster Marshall after a manhole cover fell in on Sunday. It caused queues that held people up for up to an hour and the worst was feared as hundreds of thousands of people head for two of Dorset's biggest events, the Bournemouth Air Festival, which starts on Thursday, and the Great Dorset Steam Fair, which runs until Sunday.
At one point BT, which is responsible for the manhole, said that work to fix the problem could take days. But the firm managed to repair the manhole on Wednesday and the road was fully reopened.
Some 200,000 people are expected to descend on the steam fair at Blandford, while an estimated half a million are set to head to Bournemouth for the air festival. Traffic built up on the A354 in both directions at Tarrant Hinton, with congestion back to the A350, as visitors headed for the first day of the steam fair.

I have to say, how did two major events get scheduled for the same weekend!

If public transport was more reliable, and less costly, and Bournemouth train station was closer to the town, a lot of people might not be on the roads.
Another major factor is our ridiculous infrastructure.

The perception is far worse than the reality, try it sometime.

I would just like to say well done to whoever thought of having two events at the same time. Kets just shut up shop and not go to work and stay at home. Pathetic

The two events are miles apart and the air show is a bus ride / 20 min's cycle away for the Bournemouth residents. The fact that a man hole cover will take weeks is the real story, fine BT for each day just for the incovenience, that could of had someones eye that could ..... and speed up the work!

Fill the hole, tarmac it over (allow an hour for the work) and let the sloworm BT take as many weeks as they like to assess the 'problem'.

So having two events at the same time will have a massive effect on this area muppet

So for me public transport is a non-starter.

Why couldn't 'they' have just put a steel plate, capable of taking the traffic load, over the hole as a temporary measure together with suitable warning signs. Surely the manhole can't be that big.

Public transport! Don't make me laugh, for people who start work before 8am it's a total joke and if you live in the Forest and work in Bournemouth god help you if you haven't got a car!! The first bus doesn't arrive until 8.30!!! What sort of service is that I will be staying well away from Bournemouth over the next few days, shame because airshow is fantastic and my kids love it. However, last year we sat in 21/2hrs of solid traffic trying to get out of bournemouth, never again.

Much as I would like to see both of these events I will not be doing so because of the traffic jams. They would be bad enough without the problems on the A31. I will just have to sit and watch the planes from my garden!

Firstly it is not the fault of Bournemouth or Dorset having two big events on at the same time. The problem lies with BT and the Highways Office for not having some sort of infrastructure in place. No diversionary routes because of the ever long works at Wimborne on the bridges.
Bournemouth Air Festival, I believe the majority of traffic will be coming down the A338, and hopefully use the Park and Rides at Littledown and Kings Park. Traffic coming from the west can divert on to the A35 at Bere Regis and make their way to the Bournemouth University Park and Ride, or one of the other two. Traffic from the east for the Dorset Steam Fair can be rerouted down the A341, and onto the A35.
This leaving the stretch of A31 for the appropriate people to get on with the job.
To use the excuse of traffic chaos is somewhat over exaggerated as far as I am concerned. If visitors and locals would use the infrastructure provided and put in place, things would not be too bad.
PoolemaninScotland, I take it you will be staying away then. So will not expect any comments on the Air Festival come Monday. Cheers.

Eg, Bransgore to Christchurch £5.50 return, Christchurch to Bournemouth, appx same distance, £2.20 all day. Perhaps W&D could explain this!?

As for your traffic calming measures i am glad to say i have never heard such rubbish in all my life. How the hell do you know where all the traffic is going to be coming from. Do you know something that we dont. Are you that intelligent that you can predict the movements of every vehicle in dorset in the next few days. It amazes me how people can decide where the u.k population are travelling from to see an airshow or some old steam vehicles. You are one hell of a person!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Perhaps it is because I still live in the area, unlike yourself. I am fully aware of the routes in and out of Bournemouth, and the routes to get to the Dorset Steam Fair. If I was not, I would not have said anything.
Obviously you have been out of Poole for some time, or you would have known that the main routes in and out of Bournemouth are the A31, A35 and the A338. Read any road map, or autoroute and it will show you.
What is this WE bit, it is only you who has taken it upon yourself to argue some thing you obviously no nothing about. I am not predicting the movements of vehicles individually, a I am predicting the flows of traffic into the town.
I am not one hell of a person, but a person from hell. (Sorry, I quite liked that so I wrote it down).

Yet another one who has to revert to name calling because some one has the front to stand up and be counted.
There maybe moaners and whingers who will do just that on Monday, but is that not par for the course, as it is with anything anyone tries to do down this neck of the woods. Not everyone is ever happy.
Of course the dozen or so who do moan and whinge I suppose does not compare the many thousands who will have had a great time at either or both of the event.
Then again I cannot see them throwing the towel and moving to Scotland either.
Enjoy your weekend.

Blimey he must have been desperate, going to Scotland is like the modern equivalent of being sent to Australia I wonder what he done to deserve such a punishment.
Still good riddance seems quite appropriate.

The main problem is the miserable A31 itself, How a single lane, twisty cart track could be classified as a major national route from Ringwood to Bere Regis.
Apart from all the hold ups on the major route there are at least 2 road accidents a day on the stretch of road.
The residents of Dorchester and Weymouth need have no fear of traffic hold ups when the Olympics arrive. It will all be stuck on the A31 approaching Bere Regis

The A31 is open again. Nice work.
I was under the impression a new road was being build prior to 2012 into Weymouth.

A train station locally would be appreciated by many..me being one of them!
