ILLEGAL CAMP IN PRIME SPOT
 |
| GOOD VIEW: Just one of several caravans belonging to travellers parked in the Bournemouth East Overcliff car park area |
AN illegal encampment of travellers is set to enjoy a prime view of the Bournemouth Air Festival after the council admitted it cannot evict them before September.
Around six caravans managed to get into the car park near Monkey Island on the East Overcliff, despite enhanced security measures.
And now they have set up camp, all the council can do is hope they leave before the town's four-day air festival begins on Thursday.
The car park is due to be used as disabled parking for air festival visitors and the East Overcliff will also be closed to traffic on every day of the festival.
Bournemouth council is due to go to court on Wednesday to obtain an eviction order but councillors have been warned this will not be able to take place until September.
In an email to councillors, community parks and countryside officer Brian Heppenstall said: "We have been pre-warned by both the court bailiffs and the Dorset Police that no evictions can take place until September 1 at the very earliest, due to resources."
| “We’ve got until Thursday so we will have to see what the position is then." | | Air festival director Jon Weaver |
|
Following the last incursion on the East Cliff, the council placed massive boulders along the verges to deter travellers.
But East Cliff and Springbourne ward councillor Anne Filer said: "They got in despite all the rocks, they must have gone in through the car park. There is a height restriction at the entrance but they must have gone over the grass.
"Residents are not happy about it but we are doing everything that we can. People are calling for more defences but we don't live in a fortress. You can't fortify the whole of the public open space in Bournemouth."
Air festival director Jon Weaver said he was hopeful the travellers would move on to the Dorset Steam Fair before the air festival began.
"If they do stay, the issue we have got is what we do with the disabled parking," he said. "We've got until Thursday so we will have to see what the position is then.
"They will also have to obey the road closure orders so they will find their movements restricted. But they will undoubtedly have a great view of the air festival."

Maybe if the council stopped wasting tax payers money on pathetic air festivals which wont benefit me at all and maybe provided an area for these travellers to use then people wont have this problem. Not rocket science to me????

I think you will find a lot of local people that are looking forward to it.
The problem about a site is really that easy isn't it!?!

People like me working hard to get some quality of life and then seeing sites built for people who have no intention of giving back to society...THAT'S a waste of payers' monies!!

How about just all of us civil, law abiding people cramming in, around and on top of whatever is in that car park anyway! See how they like it when their space is invaded! And everyone I know is looking forward to the show.

It's about time these councils did something for the Gypsy's and Travellers.
you took their land and their stopping places and you wonder why you lot are having troubles now. It's of your own making.

Mabybe the council should park up a few bin lorries in the same car park for a while. Stink them out.
It is laughable that they can move rocks into place without seeing that the crafty travellers will just drive over the grass.

So the Gypsies have taken over the air show car park meant for the disabled - this says everything that needs to be said about Gypsies and their contempt for the public.

the travellers site in poole is just being re done after they all trashed the place and nicked all the copper pipe out the shower blocks - they dont deserve to be given a new site... people would not have a problem with them if they didnt go round leaving rubbish and robbing things. as for the air festival its the best thing that has been done in bournemouth for a long time

Over the weekend I have already posted a letter to the Echo about the Monkey Island car parking for disabled people - air festival. A most unsuitable site anyway as no toilet facilities unless you go down the zig zag which is nigh on impossible for the majority of disabled people. So now the council has to work two things out - how to get rid of the travellers that quite rightly one person has stated, should have been spotted on the CCTV (operators asleep presumably) and to provide a new suitable place for disabled people wanting to see the air festival. But back to my point about the lack of toilets at Monkey Island - another huge bill to taxpayers due for clearing up the excrement left by these 'people'. Only three days to go and no doubt whole heap of excuses to be made as to the fact that in fact nothing can be done by the council, yet again. At least instigate investigation into the CCTV operators and sack the lot of them before Bournemouth is over run with these caravans before Thursday.

Due to what "resources"? Should this not be a priority?

So you think it's acceptable for them to park in a disabled parking area? They are showing absolute contempt for society and for people less fortunate than themselves.
They are doing themselves no favours here. They should be very very ashamed of what they have just done. There is no excuse for it. They have just victimised disabled people for their own gained. I'm disgusted!

To be honest I don't know or care what the difference is between gypsies, travellers or new age travellers. I don't blame any group. I just think the six caravans worth of people who have parked up are an absolute disgrace to the human species. All they are managing to do is stop disabled people from watching the air show, and giving any type of gypsy or traveller a very, very bad name.
People don't know the difference between the groups so I'm afraid that their disgusting actions will cause all gypsies to be tarred with the same brush. I'm sure that their are some lovely romany folk out their but this lot are scum!

So really it sounds like any of us residents can ignore all the special parking arrangements and just park up on any grass verge we like then?
There is a grass area where Manor Road meets East Overcliff Drive. It is on a slight hill and would give a superb vantage point for the air festival.

Heard something on Radio Solent the other day (can't remember the details as I was on the phone and heard it in the background), saying these travellers do have homes elsewhere on which they pay council tax and they pay taxes. They travel at certain times of the year for work. Bet they wouldn't like it one bit if we travelled to where they have these homes, set up camp, interfered with their lives and left rubbish and human excrement all over the place where they live.
Was legally passing by one of these illegal camps on my push bike one day, and a child no older than about 4 ran at me and told me to f*** off. Shows how they drag their children up and the standards they instill in them.

Once again the traveller society has proved that they are the scum of society. When will our stupid laws change and allow us to simply grab these people by the scruff of the neck and sned them packing as they only truely deserve. As I post everytime these poeple invade our space...local people, DO NOT use builders, driveway layers or any other form of manual labour that just calls on your door because you can be sure it's these scroungers ready to do you a poor job for a rediculous amount of money. If there's no work there's no point them coming here.
Roll on September when we can once again kick these lowlife's off our public spaces.

If you or I park illegally we are fined, clamped or both. Why is society so scared of these travellers, who choose to ignore the laws that the rest of us abide by, that they can simply do whatever they want with no adverse consequences? Something is very very wrong here.

Kate - I am sure that the lack of toilet facilities for the disabled will not be an issue for these visitors. What do you expect to happen as a result of writing to the Echo? Do you imagine that they will dip into their funds and find an alternative? Why not try contacting the correct people to get something done and stop using its pages to winge? As for these people - they are illegally parked and the Police should find resources to move them on - simple as that!

How about me taking my caravn onto public land the weekend instead of to a proper site. I wonder if the authorities would come and check on my needs!

Daisy, Sandbanks:
Did you damage property to get on to land to camp?
Did you leave piles of rubbish and human excrement?
Did you not pay council tax, but expect those of us that do to pay for cleaning up after you? Were your vehicles taxed, insured and MOTed?
Did you pay parking fees if you parked in a car park?
Did you intimidate local residents?
Did you rip off people with shoddy work?
You know the answers law-abiding person would give. I think we have the right to get more than a little bit upset with what these people are doing - they are breaking the law and getting away with it, as well as behaving in an anti-social, and therefore unacceptable, manner.

Daisy - God Bless you too. I am sure that everyone understands that in a democracy people have the freedom to choose how they live their life. What you dont see to understand that it is unacceptable to choose which laws we wish to abide by. They apply to us all. So what upsets us is that a separate set of rules are applied to these people whenever they feel like it. We dont like the thought of people getting something for nothing. This is not their land and even with transit sites, they will continue to break the laws. It's a bit unreasonable asking us to respect the way they live when they have no respect for anything themselves. I cant wait until all the Eastern Europeans realise that if tehy stick a caravan on the back of their vehicles they can get away without paying for a whole load of services whilst getting a load more free. Instead of taxing diesel vehicles, the Goveernemnt should tax caravans.

Had a boss once who, when travellers (not Gypsies or Romanys note) moved onto land he owned, simply went out and hired a JCB. He commenced digging a wide, deep trench around where the caravans were located and would have filled the hole with water once it was completed. It was remarkable how quickly they moved once they realised they would be marooned for an indefinite period, unable to get out for food etc without a muddy swim. Surely the council has the relevant equipment to carry out a similar exercise?

[bold]Pooleman from Scotland[/bold] You obviously moved up to Scotland for a reason, therefore you would not benefit in anyway, and in all honesty really have no say in the matter if it does not concern you.
[bold]Daisy from Sandbanks[/bold] It is obvious that you are passionate about your life as a Gypsy and/or a Romany, and I for one agree with you there. However, the majority of the "Travellers" who decide to camp up on various unofficial sites through Dorset are usually the Travellers from Ireland and Scotland who descend on the south during the summer to gain work such as tarmacing, and other jobs which hinder the lives of many of the residents. I have in the past been a victim of them and their work which resulted in injury and damage to my property.
What many who agree with what they are doing, do not take into consideration the amount of destruction they cause to land, parking areas, etc. Again I have witnessed this. Perhaps Daisy, without being rude, you should come away from Sandbanks and visit some of the sites they land on, and how they are left.
The previous site at Mannings Heath was destroyed and removed during its first few weeks. It was replaced, and again destroyed. Travellers by means of the word alone do not want to stay in one place. If there is not work, then they move on. To build purpose built sites is no good to them, or to anyone else. It is a total waste of local resources that could be put to use elsewhere.
It is high time that the Council and the powers to be realised that the people of Bournemouth and surrounding areas can not and will not put up with this for ever. The law needs to be changed now. We should not have to wait for a week or 10 days for an eviction when we all know that if it was us, we would be prosecuted and moved on immediately.
Or is the Council building up a work force for all the proposed plannings of the Vision of Bournemouth. Just a thought.
Perhaps the Police could take one of their recruiting caravans along and park it up, that should make them move.
I am wondering of the consequences when all the Air Festival visitors turn up on Thursday at the East Cliff. Will there be any confrontation. Bournemouth people are not happy.

Dear oh Dear, yet another Echo story that gets everyone arguing on here! My opinion and please don't shoot me for it, not ALL travellers are criminals/low life. I used to live in Herfordshire and we had a site of 20 caravans turn up on land on night. As a near neighbour, I went and asked them what was happening, to my shock and amazement they were really nice people, had a cup of tea with them. They had owned the land for 40yrs and had simply came back to set up roots. They put up new fencing, hanging baskets, pots and planted trees. Built proper shower/toilets with council permission and to this day 10yrs on get on fantastic with the community and their kids are a credit to them. Please don't tar them all with the same brush, some are nice people. Just my opition, and yes I do agree it still is a car park and they shouldn't be there, but please don't hang them for it.

Lack of resource??
They're all getting their notepads ready to write parking tickets for those illegal parked on double yellows. Maybe if they painted double yellows under the caravans, they might be able to move them quicker. Great use for the "Spy in the sky camera's they worked well!"

Can't really blame them. They would not be able to see a thing from Kings Park. Council take note - any plans for a permanent camp out in Matchams will fail. Too far from all the attractions for them.

Exactly what 'resources' are needed to move on a few caravans ?
Back a few years ago, when we would harmlessly set up a sound system and arrange hundreds of people to dance in a warehouse, the Police seemed to be able to
a) Wake up the magistrate and have him sign an order to stop the event, and
b)Turn up in van-fulls, haul away all the equipment, permanently and without redress
c) Arrest 2 or 3 dozen people, charge and process them, and
d) Surround me in a large group and beat me into a ditch.
And yet a few scraggly gypsies and their kids in some plywood boxes are suddenly beyond their means ?
What a load of rubbish.
We demand a swift and appropriate police response to the criminal acts of trespass that have occurred on the East cliff. For such a blatant and public flouting of the law to be seen to be permitted to continue apparantly without consequence does us all a great dissevice as both tax payers and citizens.
It sends a message the the Law is something that has no power, that can be publicly flouted and disrespected and makes our area a more dangerous place to live and work.
Do what we pay you for, no excuses, and do it now.

My experience as a pilot suggests that plagues of locusts are a very real danger to low-altitude aircraft.
Frankly, the authorities response shows a response for local people. Time an time again, while the state machinery is able to marshall all the all the enforcement resources it needs to batter and fine the law abiding citizen, the 'something for nothing' brigade are treated with brown-nosing respect for their so-called 'rights'.
It epitomises the wretched condition of this country, and pushes me (and I suspect thousands like me) towards a campaign of direct action and civil disobedience.
Whowever suggested that the neanderthals of Bournemouth should target their anti-social activities at the travellers has my full support.

On the bright side, it appears that parking restrictions will be lifted for the duration of the Air Festival. If the Police and Council have no resources to tackle the Gypsies, I assume they will have none to tackle anybody else parking illegally ?

1. It takes 7 days to enforce an Eviction Order. That's because the people about to be evicted have a right to appeal.
2. You can hardly blame travelling families' desire to share the benefits of the wonderful amenities and views along your delightful part of the south coast.
3. To be fair, they probably moved in at dead of night and weren't aware that this car park was designated for use by the disabled. I'm sure if a delegation of reasonable local residents popped round for a cuppa rosie lee and a chinwag they would quickly see the error of their ways and move on without further ado and no need for civil enforcement measures.

To be fair, they probably moved in at dead of night and weren't aware that this car park was designated for use by the disabled. I'm sure if a delegation of reasonable local residents popped round for a cuppa rosie lee and a chinwag they would quickly see the error of their ways and move on without further ado and no need for civil enforcement measures.[/quote] 4. Some people live in cloud cuckoo land.

This says it all about the UK. Minorities get priority in everything. Crime pays, being a single mother pays, have loads of kids pays with family credits etc, being lazy pays and being an immigrant pays. Be hard working, pay your taxes and be the losers in society. More so for pensioners. Its only a matter of time before we have civil unrest at the injustice of it all.

In which case traffic wardens can't get you.
I could be wrong about that. I'm only basing this on observations of current real world events! Its possible that there is one law for them and one law for us? Would be interesting to test that.

Surely the council has the relevant equipment to carry out a similar exercise?[/quote] They sure have dude. Trouble is they haven't got the 'bottle'.

They could invite the guys from 'Braniac-Science Abuse' who have some interesting ways of dealing with caravans!

Then the full Police State modus operandican be put in place. The won't be short of 'resources' for that eventuality. Can't you see? It's all a wind up to drive us over the edge.

Oh my goodness, reading through all the comments has been extremely entertaining, better than the telly. The English have become too soft in past years which is why situations like this have arisen. A definite need for strong arm tactics and judging by the comments posted, there are plenty out there who would like to have a hand in doing just that. Best of luck guys. I will miss the air show but be back in my home town next month for a visit.

Quite few comments as yoy would expect! Getting rid of the Air show and giving these people a permenant site (Cherry Tree Nursery is a lovely site - Nature Reserve and all that) is my favourite.

I don't understand how these people are able to exclude themselves from the law, but at the same time are able to gain protection from it.....I tried hiding in the bathroom when the Bailiffs were banging on the door...it did'nt work for me....oh yeah I ...I'm self employed and have a mortgage....I've got no rights...
