Out-of-the-box and on to the wicket
 |
| PLEASED: Alastair Saverimutto |
ALASTAIR Saverimutto has insisted that Cherries' experiment with cricket offers just a "small taste" of things to come in the new owners' attempts to generate non-matchday income.
Twenty20 made its debut at Dean Court yesterday and, despite a small crowd of about 600 turning out for the event, co-owner Saverimutto declared himself pleased.
A star-studded PCA Masters side, which included former internationals Mark Alleyne, Ian Harvey, Chris Lewis, Dean Headley, Gladstone Small and Peter Such, lost out to a Hampshire XI in an entertaining clash.
And Saverimutto believes the first of the club's "out-of-the-box" events was a success.
"The idea was to put an event on that didn't involve football and not least to attract new people into the stadium to show them that we exist," he explained.
"One of the things that we have done with the venue and the cricket match is we've been able to capture a lot of new data.
"We'd say 90 per cent of the attendance were non-football so these are all new people.
"This was not all about hit and miss. We're very pleased the event has taken off and people enjoyed the occasion."
Saverimutto, who admitted he would have liked to have seen more people in attendance for the cricket match, thinks ventures such as yesterday's are important to the club's future and he revealed more are being planned.
"It's great to see because out-of-the-box is important for Bournemouth and for my business plan," he told the Daily Echo.
"This is just a small taste of where we'd like to take the venue event theme.
"Already we're talking about a development of this event at the end of the season where the Masters team can take on a representative football XI.
"That side of things would be very interesting, especially when you play a dual code where you've got cricket in the morning and a football match in the afternoon.
"As the business goes we want to put new things on all the time and create a calendar of events.
"You have to start somewhere and we believe this was a great opportunity for us and let's hope we can do more from this, using the information we have from this event.
"We've got things in the pipeline. We're creating a new business here and it's very important we provide the opportunity for the business to develop its revenues."
Yesterday's Twenty20 match provided plenty of entertainment, with the two high-calibre teams producing a lively and, at times, amusing spectacle.
Batting first, Hampshire raced to 210 for eight off their 20 overs.
Star batsman Jimmy Adams top-scored with a rapid 58 from just 29 deliveries. He struck two fours and six sixes, one of which flew out of the stadium.
Adams's support came from Billy Taylor (35) and Greg Lamb (30), while the wickets were shared among the PCA attack.
Former England players Small, Lewis and Such chipped in, with Rob Coombs (2-37 off four overs) returning the best figures.
In reply, the Masters lost wickets early on and never managed to keep up with the required rate, eventually being bowled out for 183.
However, Dean Headley (39), Small (42) and Such (26 not out) - all better known for their bowling - gave the crowd plenty to cheer about late in the day.

How about getting some "in the box" things up and running, like a club shop?

Some things never change.

Not an amazing business plan that, just common sense.

If this is how a marketing Company market new events, god help us all. How an earth do they know 90% of the crowd were newbies? On a dismal day to be by the sea, how many tourists would have turned up had they known the thing was even going on. Shame on the Echo for not helping advertise this a bit more and shame on our director's for not thinking "out of the box" when it comes to marketing.

I agree with many of the comments made by other "posters" the marketing was marked by its absence, I had intended to go and waited for details to appear in the "Media", but nothing! The Club does need to get its "act" together if it is to increase revenue, the Shop needs to be trad[bold]bold[/bold] ing and they need to get back the facility to pay by debit and credit cards, making it possible to book tickets on line or by telephone.Get the basics right before launching events, or they will fail.

The directors need to start concentrating on building solid foundations and getting the 'little things' right such as getting the club shop in order, making sure the website is up to date, this are all minor details but its essential we have all these sides of the business running smoothly before they can even entertain the having any "out of the box" ideas, they seem to be wanting to run before they can walk.

Must have generated including the corporate stuff circ £8K at very most £10K.
I have spoken to a friend of mine at the PCA and he said the revenue must have gone at least 3 ways (Probably 4 ways).
Testimonial fees, PCA always give money to Charity from matches, PCA needed to cover any costs and then AFCB would get anything left over.
What budget did you stage the event out of Saverimutto? or has Sutton taken a pay cut?
Put your money (what little you have left) towards buying some much needed players and getting a manager who can pull us out of this mess.

Maybe with a little more 'triple synergy think tanking' and 'out of the box brainstorming' this idea could be run up the flagpole again.

I wonder if noise laws would prevent that from happening.

Some if the Hampshire 11 warmed up in front of one of the goals kicking a ball around pre-match. Best football i've seen at Dean Court for a while

Here we go again shoot down any attempt to promote Dean Court and ridicule it as a farce. Given that three or so weeks ago they were not certain that AFCB would be theirs and still be in existence I am not surprise that marketing such event was going to take top priority. In any case the 5000 + who were there on Saturday were given leaflets about the event so at least 5000 + knew about it. Are we always going to look for the things, which are not done and overlook any positive attempt to get AFCB back on its feet? For heaven’s sake stop moaning and give the new guys a chance.

Wow, what a lot of negative posts, we have very little revenue opportunities as it is and the new CE is trying to bring in more revenue for the club and on his first attempt he gets this from the fans, I get the feeling some people will never be happy no matter who owns the club or what they do. I for one welcome any ideas from the club that in time will bring in much needed turnover, this may not have been a rip roaring success but the seldom are on their first attempt, but if people become aware of more happening then things will improve, look what else was on yesterday, so come on do we want the club to survive or not?

as i said if this had been correctly advertised this event would have easily attracted far more support than it did ,and as i said due to the popularity of 20/20 cricket the 600 could easily been 6000

Thought this was advertised weeks ago? I knew about it at the Portsmouth friendly. I would say 600 is low but it was a first attempt, whatever the outcome this time at least the ideas are coming, there is no way the club will ever survive on just the home gates on match day so anything that could increase income has to be applauded, sometimes you have to slip up before you get it right, don't be so quick to kick the club in the crown jewels all the time.

in my view concerts are the way forward
realistically the nearest stadia are london cardiff and birmingham
if alastair could get the main stream groups to consider dean court as a serious concert venue then i would see a healthy income for the club not just from the concert but catering etc
oasis sold all there venues out with in 4 hours and many other touring groups do the same
bournemouth is central ok not as big as stadia i mentioned but with a big name group/artist playing i would confidently put a years wages down that all tickets would sell

The problem with music concerts is that the finishing times of the shows would be restricted due to the ground proximity to residential homes.
We know that the site needs to try and generate income during the off-season, but I'd rather he keeps a very close eye on our results. We cannot afford any repeats of Saturday.

In fairness to the owners the only way they can really help the team on the pitch is through financial support so I think they are doing the right thing by focusing on earning the money to give KB some freedom. Only then can we properly judge if he's up to the job.

Perhaps next time sport-6 will send out fliers to local cricket clubs and the Rosebowl and we'll see a much better attendance.
So long as these ideas aren't costing AFCB large sums of money then I'm happy for the experiments to continue.

And Saverimutto believes the first of the club's "out-of-the-box" events was a success
I hope we make enough money to get a few in the box events like GOALS GOALS GOALS

at least alastair is looking for the extra income from outside football but it will be no quick fix sadly we need to look for inspiration with what we currently have with regards our team

Only then can we properly judge if he's up to the job.[/quote] Preferably freedom from the rest of his contract

Some right funny posts on here!
Richard Mayes saying he was "waiting" to be told when it was on!
Alasdair saying that London/Cardiff are the nearest venues! Unfortunately theres St Marys AND the Rosebowl.
6,000 for top flight 20/20 yes, but not friendly stuff.
Criticise yes, but please stop talking nonsense.

...if it's cricket you want Savi...then tell Bond it's the end of his over and put him at long on...and bring on an attacking bowler who can knock over the opposition!

So getting 600 to the cricket is the answer to the fact that Sport6 are not making any real investment in AFCB Bournemouth. If this is the future we have to pray and hope that these rumours of takeover are true or we will be in administration again (and therefore effectively relegated to the Conference) long before the season is out.
